What?

Defined as very early Krautrock and limited to a 500-only release, this album, from the Spanish reissue label, has always been considered “lost” to the genre, mainly because it wasn’t released on the usual Krautrock labels. It was, in fact, handled by Maritim. What were the owners of this K-Tel-alike outfit thinking of? How this drug-addled freak-out made it onto that roster is anyone’s guess. Imagine The Story Of O published by Mills & Boon. The record sleeve suggests James Last, but the music pushes boundaries, bestowing rhythm to free jazz, plus psychedelic jams drenched in nasty effects. Think of Can on a strange (as opposed to future) day, or a primordial Amon Düül. If you’re into Krautrock, get this record now.

...Imagine Reynols or Yahowha 13 gone lounge, trying to entertain a bunch of jet-setters at some hip, swinging ’60s party… It’s called Fantastic Party after all and that’s what it was meant as, a party record! Some cheesy German record label in 1970 put this together, presumably paying (with drugs?) a bunch of studio musicians to create a one-off psychedelic exploitation album by a nonexistent “band”. A dime a dozen back then, maybe, but these guys really really went for it. It is pretty darn tripped out...

Wasted psychedelic-lounge by The Homosexuals’ bassist (Amos) and mysterious U.K. D.I.Y. phenomenon Sara (whose double-7” Sara Goes Pop is beyond amazing). This is seriously deranged material. Sara hollers out-of-tune drug-anthems above the repetitive drum machine as Amos (barely) slaps out some Latino jams in the haze of debauchery driven by the washed-out synth permeating their evening’s soundtrack. There is a lot of banging and a lot of phased vocals and even more weird “noise” occurring behind the scenes. No amount of purpose could yield such a bizarre concoction of popular noise. Invite To Endless Latino is the perfect cassette; homey, strange, beautiful, mysterious, quaint, soft, particular and simple. I dream of accidentally making music this singular. Easily one of my favorite possessions. Extremely rare and sought after.

Deluxe double vinyl gatefold reissue of a major obscure early Los Angeles Free Music Society cassette, originally available in a run of only 20 copies in 1977. Duck is perhaps best loved for his tenure with Smegma and The Doo-Dooettes but he is also known as a drummer for The Dream Syndicate as well as working w/Human Hands, Paul Is Dead and The Square Haircuts. However, Dennis Duck Goes Disco may well prove to be his most historically potent release. Recorded using nothing but turntables and vinyl, Duck uses his skills as a free drummer to manipulate stuck grooves, needle blats, analogue static and scratched discs into melodic/percussive assemblages that cross that daffy early-LAFMS style with very psychedelic miniatures, Industrial tone-poems, computerised number stations threat and funny vocal skits. Aspects of both Christian Marclay and Emil Beaulieau are flashed on here and there but overall this feels very much like a record made by a drummer using records. Anyone intent on chasing down the various manifestations of the legendary LAFMS movement will wanna spend extended time in here. Review:
What you get is a terrific collection of swingin' bachelor pad music, complete with a view of the Reeperbahn; most of the tracks suggest someone like Si Zentner trying to play something like rock & roll, with an added level of cultural disconnect added as the performers struggle to play American-style pop, often while attempting to sing in English (frequently in a manner that suggests they learned the lyrics phonetically). If this sounds like a pan so far, though, it isn't -- The In-Kraut is actually lots of fun, with most of the tunes boasting tight arrangements, great studio bands, and punchy, enthusiastic performances, even if the results often have little to do with rock & roll. (It's significant that, according to the liner notes, the upbeat "Marihuana Manta" was recorded by a musician who never smoked dope in his life, while "Molotov Cocktail Party" sounds less like a call to revolution than a tribute to the pleasures of blowing up stuff.) For the most part, The In-Kraut finds studio-centric big bands attempting to tackle rock & roll, and while they don't quite make it on face value, they come up with something that's exciting, compelling, and lots of fun -- proof that sometimes squares can be a lot cooler than you'd expect.

Review:
The upbeat "Swinging London" by the Hazy Osterwald Jet Set is a standout. The band shouting out London landmarks and addresses of "The Swingin' City" over a KPM styled groove. Mary Roos offers a take of the Jorge Ben penned Sergio Mendes hit "Mas Que Nada" - here in German as "Blauer Montag" (Blue Monday). The legendary James Last provides a number titled "Soul March". It's uptempo, full and well produced with a nice touch of flanging to give it that "sky-ing" effect. Trippy! My fave of the disc is by an attractive gal named Hildegard Knef. In her slightly accented English she talks deadpan over a light jazzy groove on "Holiday Time". It's way out - try to imagine Nico pretending to be a dominatrix reading news headlines and you've got the drift. Dieter Reith's brilliant funky Hammond n horns "No No No" reminds me of Georgie Fame and The Blue Flames take on Earl Van Dyke's "Soul Stomp". No wonder it's culled from an album entitled "Hammond Explosion". The organ and sitar groove of Carlos Fendeira on "Gimmi Moro" is a wild mix that really works and sounds like a deleted cut from the Vampyros Lesbos film soundtrack! "Moon Mission" by Kai Rautenberg & Orchester Juergen Ehlers is a fuzz guitar vs. organ duel that is definitely my favorite instro excursion on the disc. If horns and Hammonds are your thing you need The In-Kraut Vol. 2 for your next soirre, gig, love-in et al.

Review:
Described in the liner notes as the final volume in this series focusing on late-'60s and early-'70s psych and soul obscurities from West Germany, The In-Kraut, Vol. 3 is, like its predecessors, a perfect mix of the knowing wink and the honestly amazing. Whether it was a question of the technical expectations of a German listening audience, or simply good playing all around, nearly every song on here sounds incredible on a level of tactile impact: horns stab out of speakers, vocals are crisp and clear, and some of the feedback levels sound monstrous even after decades of heavy metal. That said, the flip side lies in the enjoyably workmanlike quality of so many of the contributions: these are adaptations and reworkings of so many American sources of inspiration in particular (or at a slight remove), thus the jaw-dropping version of Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" by bandleader Dieter Zimmermann, who replaces the vocal line with a horn section that sounds like a way ahead of its time college marching band, and the mid-song freak-out with lush strings set against a brooding bass swell that it's almost easier to simply marvel at how well they transmute the original material for the kind of starchy swing that seems to be the best way to dance to them. Perhaps inevitably, Peter Thomas steals the show on the whole thing with "The World Is Gone," a bizarre news bulletin-turned-street corner giggle/rant backed by his usual brass-led groovers. Whether it's South African expatriate Gene Williams' rather forced vamps on "My Soul Is Black," or the ridiculous singing on Georgees' "Butterflies Never Cry" -- it makes Blood, Sweat & Tears seem like Low -- this is definitely something that once heard is never forgotten. Whether that's positive or negative may depend on how you feel on the day.

WHY:
I forgot to upload this brilliant album ever since my Instrumetales compilation. Lots of links were deleted recently so I decided to help keep this album flowing.

ALBUM REVIEW
Bad Vugum's saga continues, this time with a release by Aavikko from Siilinjärvi, Finland. The group's previous record was a self-titled EP, interesting in itself because of its distribution: Apart from the hi-fi CD version, there was also a 7" version including the same songs but recorded on a lo-fi cassette recorder. Not only that, but the music itself was innovative: Aavikko was redolent of Add N to X's punkish qualities: acoustic drums and cheap keyboards playing songs strongly influenced by Russian folk music and Finnish synth-based themes. Derek! is a natural follow-up. The main concept is pretty much the same, but the production (if there is any) is better and the guys in Aavikko have a better idea of what they're doing. And although the sound quality is quite lo-fi, it represents Aavikko's punkish attitude and fits very well with the band's music. Melodies, which naturally are very important to Aavikko's music, are somehow naïve and childish, but then again it's intentional and the band itself possesses self-irony. Derek! is far from perfect; Aavikko still has a lot to learn and yet the band sounds innovative and new. Despite some limitations, Derek! is a great example of the notion that the most interesting music can be found on small record labels.

The self-styled "percussion genius of Africa," exotica-era enigma Chaino was actually born Leon Johnson in Philadelphia in 1927; raised primarily in Chicago, the details of his early life are largely a mystery, although at some point he learned to play the bongos and began touring the so-called "chitlin" circuit of black nightclubs. During the mid-1950s he surfaced in Los Angeles, and with producer Kirby Allan entered the famed Gold Star studio to record a series of otherworldly jungle exotica LPs; the first, the 1958 Verve label release Jungle Mating Rhythms, featured not only a lurid fusion of African rhythms, primal chants and lusty moaning-and-groaning but also liner notes claiming "Chaino is the only survivor of a lost race of people from the wilds of the jungle in a remote part of central Africa where few white men have ever been...(he) could play seven or more drums at the same time, with such a blur of speed that you can hardly see his hands." In the months which followed, Chaino issued three more albums -- Jungle Echoes, Night of the Spectre and Africana -- each for a different label; on occasion, he also worked as a session musician, and even appeared in pair of feature films, Nighttide and The Devil's Hand. A notoriously difficult and eccentric figure, however, in time he and Allan parted ways, and Chaino's activities over the decades to follow remain unknown; with the resurgence of interest in exotica during the mid-1990s, his brother George Johnson discovered the percussionist's whereabouts and briefly brought him back home to Chicago. Chaino nevertheless resumed his nomadic ways soon after; following surgery to remove a brain tumor, he suffered a fatal heart attack on July 8, 1999.
