By GLENN ASTARITA
Recognized for his efforts with jazz drummer Gerry Hemingway, as well as numerous other roles as a session man and leader, Dutch cellist Ernst Reijseger is also known for his avant/classical/world music proclivities. Requiem For A Dying Planet was brought about when German filmmaker Werner Herzog approached Winter & Winter record label chief Stefan Winter to find "some very personal music for two documentaries, The Wild Blue Yonder and The White Diamonds.

Regardless of taste, preference or attitude, this is a curiously interesting progression of musical frameworks, setting forth notions of divine contemplation prior to a doomsday-like event.

Within a Deep Forest (Indie Freeware PC Game)

NAME``````````````Within a Deep Forest

SIZE````````````````Just 20MB

Happy New Year Everybody! Now waste some time with this excellent minimalist indie freeware platform game.

Review by dessgeega (http://indygamer.blogspot.com/)
The game is drenched in twilight, the horizons frayed with purple. small pixel creatures lend hints of life and detail to the game’s massive rooms. a downtempo soundtrack ranges from hushed to softly jazzy, and hovers at the fringe of the player’s perception. the game itself is about a ball, with small eyes that sometimes blink and a short mouth that never moves.

Review:
What you get is a terrific collection of swingin' bachelor pad music, complete with a view of the Reeperbahn; most of the tracks suggest someone like Si Zentner trying to play something like rock & roll, with an added level of cultural disconnect added as the performers struggle to play American-style pop, often while attempting to sing in English (frequently in a manner that suggests they learned the lyrics phonetically). If this sounds like a pan so far, though, it isn't -- The In-Kraut is actually lots of fun, with most of the tunes boasting tight arrangements, great studio bands, and punchy, enthusiastic performances, even if the results often have little to do with rock & roll. (It's significant that, according to the liner notes, the upbeat "Marihuana Manta" was recorded by a musician who never smoked dope in his life, while "Molotov Cocktail Party" sounds less like a call to revolution than a tribute to the pleasures of blowing up stuff.) For the most part, The In-Kraut finds studio-centric big bands attempting to tackle rock & roll, and while they don't quite make it on face value, they come up with something that's exciting, compelling, and lots of fun -- proof that sometimes squares can be a lot cooler than you'd expect.

Review:
The upbeat "Swinging London" by the Hazy Osterwald Jet Set is a standout. The band shouting out London landmarks and addresses of "The Swingin' City" over a KPM styled groove. Mary Roos offers a take of the Jorge Ben penned Sergio Mendes hit "Mas Que Nada" - here in German as "Blauer Montag" (Blue Monday). The legendary James Last provides a number titled "Soul March". It's uptempo, full and well produced with a nice touch of flanging to give it that "sky-ing" effect. Trippy! My fave of the disc is by an attractive gal named Hildegard Knef. In her slightly accented English she talks deadpan over a light jazzy groove on "Holiday Time". It's way out - try to imagine Nico pretending to be a dominatrix reading news headlines and you've got the drift. Dieter Reith's brilliant funky Hammond n horns "No No No" reminds me of Georgie Fame and The Blue Flames take on Earl Van Dyke's "Soul Stomp". No wonder it's culled from an album entitled "Hammond Explosion". The organ and sitar groove of Carlos Fendeira on "Gimmi Moro" is a wild mix that really works and sounds like a deleted cut from the Vampyros Lesbos film soundtrack! "Moon Mission" by Kai Rautenberg & Orchester Juergen Ehlers is a fuzz guitar vs. organ duel that is definitely my favorite instro excursion on the disc. If horns and Hammonds are your thing you need The In-Kraut Vol. 2 for your next soirre, gig, love-in et al.

Review:
Described in the liner notes as the final volume in this series focusing on late-'60s and early-'70s psych and soul obscurities from West Germany, The In-Kraut, Vol. 3 is, like its predecessors, a perfect mix of the knowing wink and the honestly amazing. Whether it was a question of the technical expectations of a German listening audience, or simply good playing all around, nearly every song on here sounds incredible on a level of tactile impact: horns stab out of speakers, vocals are crisp and clear, and some of the feedback levels sound monstrous even after decades of heavy metal. That said, the flip side lies in the enjoyably workmanlike quality of so many of the contributions: these are adaptations and reworkings of so many American sources of inspiration in particular (or at a slight remove), thus the jaw-dropping version of Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" by bandleader Dieter Zimmermann, who replaces the vocal line with a horn section that sounds like a way ahead of its time college marching band, and the mid-song freak-out with lush strings set against a brooding bass swell that it's almost easier to simply marvel at how well they transmute the original material for the kind of starchy swing that seems to be the best way to dance to them. Perhaps inevitably, Peter Thomas steals the show on the whole thing with "The World Is Gone," a bizarre news bulletin-turned-street corner giggle/rant backed by his usual brass-led groovers. Whether it's South African expatriate Gene Williams' rather forced vamps on "My Soul Is Black," or the ridiculous singing on Georgees' "Butterflies Never Cry" -- it makes Blood, Sweat & Tears seem like Low -- this is definitely something that once heard is never forgotten. Whether that's positive or negative may depend on how you feel on the day.

ANDERS ILAR - LUDWIJKA - EXTENDED VISIT (2006)

UNDER OUR RUGS
ARTIST`````ANDERS ILAR
ALBUM`````
LUDWIJKA - EXTENDED VISIT
GENRE`````IDM, MICRO, GLITCH
, EXPERIMENTAL
YEAR````````2006

WHY? BY ME
The glitch-IDM scene used to be a kind of an experimental, elitist field in which electronic music makers showed their skills in achieving a functional composition with a minimal set of sounds. Nowadays, as usual, it grew into a huge scene of crap, piss and an occasional good record. Sweden based artist Anders Ilar made a really good record and what separates it from the today's rest and from the past are his fine skills in producing details, full sound and especially his gentle but melting bass lines that can heal your speakers. He is most definetly not Murcof, but he has a crouching layer of quality that many IDM "artists" dream of while being stuck inside this basically quite narrow sub-genre.

If you liked this you should like this one.

OOIOO - TAIGA (2006)

FOREST DWELLING WILD WOMEN OF JAPAN
ARTIST`````OOIOO
ALBUM`````
TAIGA
GENRE`````POST ROCK, EXPERIMENTAL, JAPANESE ROCK
YEAR```````2006

This is global underground music steeped in the enchantment of nature, the mystery of drones, the iconoclasm of Kraut and the energy of Yosakoi, driven throughout by a massive percussion workout that only pauses for lonesome trumpet blares and vocal squawks. Just maybe, if Pharaoh Sanders established a school of avant-garde composition in the forests of Finland, the inaugural graduation concert might sound something like this - assuming the mushrooms were potent enough.

“We came down from the North,” is all brother/sister duo The Knife want us to know, while OOIOO are still striving to get there, channelling sound through the tundra, taiga and Nordic forests with all their celestial and shamanistic peculiarities. Both groups are essentially about drums and their ancient purpose of uniting humans in mass ritual: in OOIOO’s case the cumulative ability of slender female Japanese to bash out a rhythm that could topple a mastodon; in The Knife’s case, processed beats lash out to create a euphoric, post-rave Nuremberg. Both groups shun all kinds of celebrity deeds and use video and projection to guard, rather than propagate, their identities. In these two videos for OOIOO and The Knife, Japanese directors spin ecological themes into a hypnotic final product that is as far removed from standard video iconography (band striving to present itself as marketable) as the sound strays from conventional musical forms.

Barely appreciated now, these will be the hipster albums of 2030. Just as some of us now affect to like a soundtrack of early 80s East Village jazz-skronk, a product of the sheer boredom and its partner freedom that have become unknowable to us in our internet age, our children will swim deeply in the ‘boredom and freedom’ of the late 00s.

ALBUM REVIEW:
In Japanese, Taiga means "big river"; in Russian, it's "forest." Both are apt descriptions for the dense, winding, jungle-like music OOIOO craft on this, their fifth album. Not to push the connection too much, but Taiga's multilingual meanings could also allude to the band's magpie-like ability to pick the most vital, interesting sounds from other cultures and fashion them into what feels like world music from an alternate universe. Despite the Japanese and Russian meanings of "taiga," the most prominent influence on Taiga comes from Africa: dense African jazz and lilting African folk-inspired guitar melodies play large roles on most of the album's tracks.

Most importantly, the album is a beautiful demonstration of how OOIOO keep changing and innovating without losing touch with what made them distinctive in the first place. Their inspired, eclectic mix of sounds and textures is always playful, but Taiga's powerful playing and sophisticated arrangements make it OOIOO's most mature album yet.

SENOR COCONUT - YELLOW FEVER (2006)

COCKTAILS FOR EVERYBODY! POSITIVE MUSIC FOR THAT COLD, AWFUL SUNDAY MORNING
ARTIST``````````````SENOR COCONUT
ALBUM``````````````YELLOW FEVER
GENRE``````````````INDIE-LATIN-ELECTRONIC-POP
YEAR````````````````2006

MY VIEW:
Now this is one talented crew. Basically, they transform other people's famous songs into latin-electro-jazzy-spacey-cute super-turbo-positive cover songs. Everybody thought that this band wouldn't last long but their good choices of songs, exotic vocals, great production and super catchy harmonies are still making my butt shake.
Positive music for that awful cold sunday morning.

ALBUM REVIEW:
Continuing on its cockeyed way through genre exercise and radical reinterpretation, Señor Coconut, having redone one set of electronic legends in Kraftwerk years back, takes another turn with the archly titled Yellow Fever. For indeed, it's the Yellow Magic Orchestra that gets the treatment this time out, but unlike the earlier effort, this is done not only with the individual participation of all three YMOTowa Tei to Mouse on Mars. The sheer number of mix-and-match efforts throughout, highlighted by a number of shorter pieces that serve as bridges between the full-on covers, could almost be a hip-hop album in an alternate universe, but the basic consistency at the heart of the album is clear -- Uwe Schmidt in his Señor Coconut guise, with vocalist Argenis Brito appearing throughout, transmogrifying YMO songs into classic Latin pop numbers. Brilliant.

BT (BRIAN TRANSEAU) - THIS BINARY UNIVERSE (2006)

"But this is something else entirely. Labels such as "ambient" or "modern classical" fit for a few seconds, then the next passage in the song blows away the last, taking any attempt to classify along with it." - Stephen Fortner in Keyboard Magazine
ARTIST``````````````BT
ALBUM``````````````THIS BINARY UNIVERSE
GENRE```````````````PROGRESSIVE?
YEAR`````````````````2007

MY VIEW:
The first track entitled "All That Makes Us Human Continues" was entirely written in Csound, taking roughly 6 months. You can call this man dedicated or you can call him a madman - it doesnt matter, this album is one of electronica's finest.

ALBUM REVIEW:
"This Binary Universe taps into BT's classical side, with expansive arrangements and intricate, albeit minimalist, thematic development. From the opening of "All That Makes Us Human Continues," BT reveals himself as a master of Eno-esque melancholy, as simple melodies evolve through an electro-orchestral instrumental palette. Lounge jazz with solos in the key of abstract, plaintive arpeggiated guitars, electro marches, minimalist hymns, and pastoral dreamscapes drive an album that seeks out joy and redemption, but not without traveling through the dark. The last track, "Good Morning Kaia," is a paean to his newborn daughter, and the most purely anthemic track on the disc.

The album makes extensive usage of a technique called circuit bending, often intentionally miswiring and short-circuiting keyboards, children's toys, and even Furbys to obtain interesting sequences of sounds that are processed and time-corrected, and then incorporated into the songs. Many of the beats and rhythms in the album were created by computer programs Brian Transeau developed himself to produce the effects he wanted.

OSVALDO GOLIJOV - AINADAMAR (2006)

SOPHISTICATED "LOW ART" OPERA MASTERPIECE

ARTIST`````````````OSVALDO GOLIJOV
ALBUM`````````````AINADAMAR
GENRE`````````````OPERA/FUSION
YEAR```````````````2006

MY VIEW:
Coppola said it better:
"There are two sides of Osvaldo Golijov that attracted me: consummate musicianship and classical training, and as well a sense of modern life, clashing cultures and the integration of past and present into a generous musical canvas. As it turned out there was a third side – a kind and interesting human being and a wonderful friend."
Francis Ford Coppola

COMPOSER BIOGRAPHY:
After his Grammy-nominated debut album Ayre, here is the second world-premiere recording of Argentinean composer Osvaldo Golijov: Ainadamar.

Golijov is today’s hottest composer – young, innovative, creatively versatile, and rooted in different cultures and styles. “Like his fellow Argentinean Astor Piazzolla, Mr. Golijov does not harness popular music; he liberates it. The energy is freed from a simple dance band function and allowed to wander into modulating keys and new meters. This is ‘low art’ arranged in sophisticated sentences.

The one-act opera Ainadamar was composed in 2003 and revised in 2005. The plot centres on Federico García Lorca and his tragic death; the Spanish author was executed by Fascist soldiers early in the Spanish Civil War in a place the Moors called Ainadamar, or “Fountain of Tears”. As in the song cycle Ayre, the female title role is interpreted by Golijov’s muse, Dawn Upshaw.

Ainadamar was recorded in Atlanta with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra under Robert Spano after a number of performances in the US. The respected critic Alex Ross of The New Yorker wrote, “the music is sensationally beautiful throughout!

V.A. - Sitar Beat Vol. 2, 3 & 4 (2006)

MEGAPACK! INDIAN HEAVY FUNK! BOLLYWOOD HARD-STYLE MASTERPIECES!
ARTIST`````````````Various
ALBUM`````````````Sitar Beat Vol. 2, 3 & 4
GENRE`````````````BOLLYWOOD HARD FUNK
YEAR```````````````2006

Unfortunately, I couldnt find volume 1 of this insane compilation but here are numbres 2,3 and 4. If anyone has volume 1, please let me know.

INFO:
The Sitar Beat series was built with the DJ in mind - collecting some of the wildest, heaviest and most psychedelic Indian Funk recorded and presenting it loud on wax, ready for the turntable.

The first four volumes were lessons in just how ahead of their time India's Bollywood composers were in the 60s, 70s and early 80s. They dug into Indian deep funk and psycho-psychedelic masterpieces recorded for the Bollywood film industry. Alongside full length killers like the funkiest track from the rare "Qurbani" soundtrack, there were Bollywood funk fiestas by acclaimed composers such as Kalanji Ananji and R.D. Burman, with extended breakbeats and re-edits that upped the funk to the boiling point. Together with Ravi's nephew Ananda Shankhar's instrumental Sitar freak outs were diva Asha Boshle's soulful wailings.

Culling its music from rare vinyl and utilizing tasteful restoration and remastering, Sitar Beat was the first time that many of these songs are heard by the record-buying public - at least in this form. Edits remove any bobbing and weaving, leaving funk that only flies straight ahead!
