Michael Giacchino - Maui Mallard In Cold Shadow Soundtrack (1996) + Game ROM

ARTIST`````Michael Giacchino
ALBUM`````Maui Mallard In Cold Shadow Soundtrack
GENRE`````Soundtrack, Tropical, Exotica, Kitsch, Video Games
YEAR````````1996

What?
...You are Maui Mallard, a hard-boiled, aloha-shirt-clad private dick...er...duck. You have been summoned to a tropical island to help the Muddrakes retrieve their stolen mojo idol, Shabuhm Shabuhm...

I am posting this for personal nostalgic reasons and because I found out today that many people are looking for it - all torrents died a long time ago. I couldn't find a single working link where the whole soundtrack is in one .rar file so I decided to post this little nerdy piece of video game soundtrack history. In short, this game is actually one of the best examples of classic, fetish 1990's detailed, high quality platform games with a few innovative twists. If you are into reading reviews of vintage games read this gamespot review. Also here is a youtube review with gameplay footage.

Besides the very detailed, moody graphics, smooth animation and catchy sounds the biggest highlight of the game was a perfect childish tropical, jazzy, kitschy, detective soundtrack composed by Michael Giacchino and orchestrated by Steve Duckworth. It was so memorable that people who played the game as kids in 1996 now clap in joy just by hearing the first drum rolls from the main menu.

It is interesting that this Donald Duck based detective-blindfolded-ninja tropical character and the entire eclectic aesthetic were created from scratch but it was all used just in this game - it is sad that Disney never turned this unique world into a TV series for kids *as they supposedly planned).

This .rar file contains the whole mp3 soundtrack + the Snes9x emulator + the Maui Mallard ROM with a simple "How To Play" explanation if you don't know how to open ROMs. Enjoy.

The Famous Castle Jazz Band Plays The Five Pennies (1959)

ARTIST`````The Famous Castle Jazz Band
ALBUM`````The Five Pennies

Stomp your feet!
The film version of cornetist Red Nichols' life was a Hollywood success, and one of the very few movies to resist the stereotypical image of jazz musicians as drunken, drug-addled losers. Here, the Famous Castle Jazz Band (who didn't play on the original soundtrack) reinterpret songs from that film in a delightful session that brings fire to the cornier production numbers written by Sylvia Fine and authenticity to standards like "That's A Plenty," "After You've Gone" (with a jaunty vocal from Monte Ballou), "Ja-Da," "My Blue Heaven," and the inevitable "When the Saints Go Marching In," given a rousing closing treatment here. Not the soundtrack, but in many ways a whole lot better.

Alain Goraguer - La Planete Sauvage Original Soundtrack (1973)

ARTIST`````Alain Goraguer
ALBUM`````La Planete Sauvage Original Soundtrack
GENRE`````
Soundtrack, French Funk, Jazz, Psych

YEAR````````1973

Some info
In 2000, the European label DC Recordings reissued on CD the soundtrack from the cult sci-fi animated film La Planète Sauvage (released in English as The Fantastic Planet). The René Laloux film, which won a Special Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 1973, was supported by a soundtrack by Alain Goraguer, mostly known for his work as Serge Gainsbourg's arranger. Goraguer's music consists of 25 short vignettes. Each is a contextualized adaptation of one of three main musical themes. The main theme is very reminiscent of Pink Floyd's "Atom Heart Mother Suite" (same half-time tempo, mellotron, harpsichord, and wah-wah guitar), and the other two are a ballad and a circus-like waltz. The music is very '70s-clichéd and will appeal to fans of French and Italian '70s soundtrack stylings. Although repetitive, the album itself creates an interesting marijuana-induced sci-fi floating mood, blending psychedelia, jazz, and funk (the album has been sampled by a few hip-hop artists). The 16-page booklet includes stills from the film, a description of the plot, and biographical notes on the composer, the director, and the illustrator, all in English -- but, alas, no musicians' credits. DC Recordings reissued the album on both CD and LP, the latter version also including a poster.

YEAR````````2010

Hover:
For the ones that liked the Landscapes compilation - it's on the similar direction but with a rather different tone. Almost all songs here are wonderful instrumentals I discovered in the last 6 months or so (mostly guitar). The only track with a full vocal is the magical
Amandrai by Ali Farka Touré.

As you will notice, the compilation is constantly divided by 1 minute long simple compositions of winds I mixed myself using some shitty effects and samples. Also - yeah I posted Calexico's El Morro again but I adore that track and it fitted really well within the selection. Just try to take it all in one listen - and leave some feedback:)

KAADA - THANK YOU FOR GIVING ME YOUR VALUABLE TIME (2003)

A BEAUTIFUL COLLAGE
ARTIST`````KAADA
ALBUM`````
THANK YOU FOR GIVING ME YOUR VALUABLE TIME
GENRE`````SOUNDTRACK, ALTERNATIVE, EXPERIMETAL, POST-ROCK, TRIP-HOP
YEAR````````2003

WHY:
Excellent, subtle album by one of Europe most interesting and mystified producers.

ALBUM REVIEW:
This album has the same kind of warm, reverb-y production that Ipecac head honcho Mike Patton often favors (see Fantomas' Director's Cut), and has a collage-type avant-garde pop/rock feel that's not a million miles away from something like Director's Cut or Mr. Bungle's California. Then again, it's certainly not beholden to those influences either: the main inspirations here seem to be hip-hop (especially in terms of the production) and old American R&B and soul music, combined with an unusually user-friendly experimental streak. Basically, Kaada takes isolated samples and loops from old recordings, mixes them together with live instruments and (sometimes) vocals, and creates new songs that are essentially virtual collaborations between musicians from these different times and places. The striking thing about this album, although it's only striking once you try to analyze it, is that it's almost impossible to tell what sound is coming from what record. Whether it's sampled or live or not, or if you know all the recordings he's dealing with, knowing such things won't prevent you from enjoying the music here.

Thank You For Giving Me Your Valuable Time is full of such subtleties, which, rather than merely sounding coy and clever, add some real heart to the album and elevate from just a technically impressive collection of sampling and production trickery into something more.

Stanley Kubrick's The Shining OST (1980)

A KUBRICK MASTERPIECE. A MASTERPIECE SOUNDTRACK. MAY BE DIFFICULT TO LISTEN.
ARTIST`````````````VARIOUS
ALBUM`````````````THE SHINING
GENRE`````````````ELECTRONIC/CLASSIC
YEAR```````````````1980

MY VIEW:
For me, one of the most thrilling horror-thriller movies ever made. Soundtrack that follows the movie perfectly. Includes some selected audio vocal excerpts from the movie. Wendy Carlos is here again but only for the main title. Fierce, devastating themes that fully describe and follow the tension and perfection of Kubrick's filmmaking skills.

Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange OST (1972)

ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT EARLY ELECTRONIC SOUNDTRACKS FOR ONE OF THE MOST CONTROVERSIAL MOVIES EVER.

ARTIST`````````````WENDY CARLOS
ALBUM`````````````A CLOCKWORK ORANGE
GENRE`````````````ELECTRONIC/CLASSIC
YEAR```````````````1972

MY VIEW:
You've all seen the masterpiece movie? Then listen to this masterpiece soundtrack performed by one of the early electronica most important figures - Wendy fucking Carlos on magnificient Moog synthesizers. Cyberpunk-futuristic-classical -ultra-violence social apocalypse. Yes - and watch the movie again. It works fine today.

ALBUM REVIEW:
from pitchfork
Wendy Carlos' music from "A Clockwork Orange" has the best effect any film music can have: when you hear it, you remember exactly when in the film it was playing, and you can definitely remember whether or not you
felt it all over again. I did with this disc. Although I haven't seen "A Clockwork Orange" in at least eight years, every creepy feeling came back to me. The milk bar, the rape, the Gene Kelly number, the prison, the torture... Jesus. I'm a happy guy....
