About album

A strange man, John Fahey, with an unusual set of guitar styles. This album, originally released on Riverboat Records and later reissued by Fahey's own Takoma label, has a lot of rough edges in terms of the recording but a tremendous amount of power when it comes to the music. Fahey was at the top of his game, alternately playful and dark, so there's never a dull moment. There is always something new to be heard on each playing.

Album review

His debut album is a sprawling, largely instrumental affair with many threads: Eastern-tinged psychedelia, hazy, pastoral folk and dusty desert blues. And they are expertly combined, with cantering acoustic guitars and propulsive grooves preventing the sound from ever lapsing into proggy torpor. - Observer Music Monthly back in 2007 when Rick Tomlinson and co. unveiled their first full length as Voice of the Seven Woods.

Fast forward two and a half years (a few cdr’s, a ten inch, a seven inch or two and a rather apt alteration of name) and you wouldn’t even countenance the idea of a “proggy torpor” whilst listening to these ten songs. They take those aforementioned elements, retaining the focus on instrumentals, and they hardboil them like misguided spiritual alchemists. The resulting explosions of alloy and lore are compelling to say the least. Groovy too. No torpor, they don’t leave any time for that kind of malarkey.

And, after the initial shock, there’s plenty of beauty to be found beneath the muscular dynamics. Tomlinson’s playing is an absolute joy to hear, whether you’re nodding slowly or thrashing your head around wildly, and the band he’s got billowing up a storm behind him aren’t half bad either. Whether it’s Seven Woods or Seven Thunders, this particular guitarist is brewing up something extraordinary amidst the hills of Lancashire.

What?
The laziest sound possible. A very interesting production mix: stripped down, retro soft synth beats entangled in classical Hawaiian/surf guitar melodies. All songs have thin basslines so the whole album is mostly in mid and high range (love those cheap, crisp snares) mostly sounding like some rare exotic vintage gem. A truly unpretentious record that takes you far, far away from the suffocating, confusing world of today's showy, charts aiming bands.

Miles Corbin is the bandleader guitarist of The Aqua Velvets whose music is featured in many Film and TV soundtracks. The whole crew seriously lacks promotion and support but after viewing their stunningly badly composed but charming website it seems they really don't give a flying fuck.

Biography:

Hossam Ramzy is an Egyptian professional percussionist, composer and music arranger. Hossam Ramzy's friends call him "The Egyptian Rhythm Ambassador". He recorded his first solo album, An Introduction To Egyptian Dance Rhythms in 1987. This album was a break from his career as one of the most sought-after session percussionists of his generation. His CV at the time read like a who’s who of '80s music - Boy George, Marc Almond, Peter Gabriel and Killing Joke were just a few of his clients. After achieving this success, Ramzy decided to look deeply at his own musical roots. He said that his intention was "to record, document, enhance and contribute to the rhythms and compositions of a musical and dance culture that was slowly being eroded by the desire for progress, modernisation and superficial Westernisation". Ramzy was convinced that a vital musical and cultural tradition and heritage would be lost if many of the compositions that he knew and loved so deeply were not recorded for future generations. He recorded 22 CDs from 1987 to 2007.

For the ones that liked the Landscapes compilation - it's on the similar direction but with a rather different tone. Almost all songs here are wonderful instrumentals I discovered in the last 6 months or so (mostly guitar). The only track with a full vocal is the magical Amandrai by Ali Farka Touré.

As you will notice, the compilation is constantly divided by 1 minute long simple compositions of winds I mixed myself using some shitty effects and samples. Also - yeah I posted Calexico's El Morro again but I adore that track and it fitted really well within the selection. Just try to take it all in one listen - and leave some feedback:)

The music on North Star was originally written at the suggestion of Barbara Rose for the film, Mark Di Suvero, Sculptor, directed by Francois de Menil for Parrot Productions Ltd. In most cases, the titles of the selections refer to works by Di Suvero which appear in the film. For the purpose of making a record a certain amount of rearranging and remixing was necessary. WHY:
Damn it took me a looong time to complete this one. I have no idea if I will be able to compile a bunch of destructive tracks that I loved this much. It was really hard because I just couldn't find enough non-trendy tracks that have enough power and style to fit together nicely. As usual, I tried to span genres and years but remain in the electronic domain the most. This 3rd Crashing compilation is darker than the humorous 2nd one. It gets really black at some moments actually. Leave some feedback - I'd like to hear your thoughts on this compilation.

Anyways, I want to thank everybody on a beautiful support I enjoyed for quite a while (even when I'm absent for several months). Few new comps and some sequels are coming soon so stay tuned.
