MY VIEW:
This band unfortunately published only this album but it is so complete that I dont know if they could ever achieve this coherent sound again. They are an insanely sane mixture of some of my favourite electronic bands such as Air, Mouse on Mars, Autechre, Stereolab and Add N (To X).
ALBUM REVIEW:
For Beginner Piano is an enjoyable album, especially for those interested in the history of the synthesizer and tape music ('60s pioneers Perrey & Kingsley are probably the best reference point). Though their attraction to vintage electronics places them in league with groups such as Add N (To X) and Stereolab, most of Plone's songs actually sound like they were recorded during the late '60s or early '70s -- the basslines are undoubtedly chunkier, and there's a bit more clutter to the productions, but the melodies are simplistic and in the forefront while the tempos rarely make it over 60 bpm. At times, Plone sounds reminiscent of Mouse on Mars or like a Spartan version of Air, but the general drift of the proceedings is much closer to Esquivel than Autechre.

Nice post. 'For Beginner Piano' is one of my favorite albums as well. Plone did record a second album but it was never released because they were dropped by Warp Records. I have the second album in mp3 format if you're interested. It's good, but not as good as the first.

Note from the file names that there's a track 9 and a track 11, but no track 10. I don't know if that was a mistake in numbering the files or if there's a song that's missing. I haven't been able to find any reference to another song anywhere though. As far as I know, this album doesn't have an official name.
The members of Plone have since gone their separate ways. Billy Bainbridge is in Seeland (myspace.com/seelanduk) and Mark Cancellara DJ's with Birmingham's Silver Dollar. But the only one I keep tabs on is Mike Johnston who has a solo album coming out later this year under the name Mike in Mono (myspace.com/monoinmike). He's also a member of the ZX Spectrum Orchestra and was formerly in the Modified Toy Orchestra. All of his projects are under the label Warm Circuit.

I also used this Plone when I am starting to learn piano. It really helps me to understand everything in playing piano. I highly recommend it to everyone who wants to learn playing piano.
