Review:
Nigel Planer (vocals) revives "Neil" from the short-lived yet highly influential BBC-TV program The Young Ones on Neil's Heavy Concept Album (1984). Although the show was set in the 1980s, Neil's lifestyle centers around the mid- to late-'60s hippie culture, an exceedingly antiquated notion directly contrasting his ultra-mod housemates. This explains the inclusion of the fairly wide selection of psychedelic and progressive nuggets amidst the spoken links and occasional originals. The idea for the long-player stemmed from his version of Traffic's early side "Hole in My Shoe" -- which came out as a single. When Planer appeared in character to promote it on BBC 2's Top of the Pops, he lost his footing, resulting in the backdrop falling apart and causing general mayhem on live television. The tune is given a lighthearted romp with notable session musician Rick Biddulph (guitar) working in phrases of the Beatles' "Strawberry Fields Forever" during the waning moments. Other fun covers are Tomorrow's "My White Bicycle," Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd on "The Gnome," Donovan's "Hurdy Gurdy Man," and "The Amoeba Song," aka the Incredible String Band's "A Very Cellular Song." Caravan's "Golf Girl" is worth additional mention, as it features a cameo voice-over from Dawn French -- half of the comedy team French & Saunders -- as (of all things) a policewoman. Instrumentally, Planer is supported by an all-star cast that includes Dave Stewart (keyboards/bass/drum/guitar), Barbara Gaskin (backing vocals), Pip Pyle (drums), Jakko M. Jakszyk (guitars), and jazz heavy Annie Whitehead (trombone), as well as Jimmy Hastings, who at one time was a primary contributor to the aforementioned prog rock outfit Caravan. "Lentil Nightmare" is a tremendously amusing Planer-penned composition that, among other things, quotes "In the Court of the Crimson King" by King Crimson amidst the proto-heavy progressive metal madness. The connecting bits of dialogue provide an outlet for Planer's quirky and earthy humor. Also of note is "Neil the Barbarian," a parody of a movie advert where Neil -- a strict vegan -- eats a hamburger, which transforms him into this superhero-type character. All said, Neil's Heavy Concept Album is thoroughly entertaining and recommended for inclined parties.

Review:
Despite having been involved with all the highbrow minimal labels you can think of (Raster Noton, 12k and Mille Plateaux among others), Frank Bretschneider's pioneering use of pristine bass tones and clipped snares has as much in common with the careful machinations of Minimal techno, Hip Hop and Dubstep as it does with the undulating explorations of installation-based sound design. Of all the founding members of the Raster mothership Bretschneider has possessed the most populist agenda and some would argue that because of this his music is amongst the label's most influential. Incredibly, "Rhythm" is Bretschneider's first album since 2002's "Balance" collaboration with Taylor Deupree for Mille Plataeux and represents his most developed, full-bodied set of tracks to date.

The most successful and yet experimental of dubstep’s first wave are those that have drifted furthest away from the grime roots of the genre. In terms of definitive albums, Burial’s eponymous debut is the shining light (or is that shining dark?) example of this, but it’s now joined by South London’s Skull Disco label compilation. Burial had the advantage of releasing an album in the purest sense of the word, but this release is only less classic because of what it is, a compilation, not because it lacks in quality or intensity. Between them, Shackleton and Appleblim (with a sole contribution by Gatekeeper) have filled two discs with tracks culled from their fledgling label’s six releases, topping it off with the inclusion of Ricardo Villalobos’ epic eighteen-minute minimal techno remix of ‘Blood on My Hands’. Shackleton opens proceedings, and the majority of tracks are simply dazzling throughout. His minimal drum pressures and ethnic atmospheres are completely convincing and never stop driving forward. It’s a sculptured, living jungle sound in the truest sense, conjuring up fierce fires and impenetrable shadows flickering in the pressing trees. Tracks like ‘Tin Foil Sky’ and the immortal ‘Blood on My Hands’ perfectly capture this mood, somehow wild and menacing, but deliberate also. Villalobos’s remix loses a little of the direct humid pressure of the original, but finds instead a slower, maddening hypnotism and an airiness that still works well. Appleblim has also honed the label’s signature minimal drum sound to perfection, but there’s less of an ethnic influence and more of an old school palette. The bass climb in ‘Mystical Warrior’, for example, is absolutely vicious and begs you to crank it up, while on other tracks he works more patiently to build brooding atmospheres. Apart from the quality of the individual tracks, the compilation has a fantastic flow to it, creating an intelligent, poised and sensual listening experience. Highly recommended, and to think they nearly shut their label down!

This is absolutely the freshest and finest new music style I heard in a looong time.

What struck me the most was the production style: basic MIDI samples WITHOUT any swooooshing FX's. A superfast complex African beat with bright and clean basic keyboard sounds and rhythmic vocals make it sound more electronic and minimal than almost all dance/house/minimal/electro crap that's been released like hamburgers in McDonalds these last 10 years.
When in 2010, African underground musicians living in harsh conditions find inspiration and develop a deeply rooted but pure modern dance music it only emphasizes how bland and pathetic the current dance scene actually is but a;lso that NEW music is possible and should be praised. The brightest light in Western dance scene that can stand close to this purity is definitely Dan Deacon.

In the next few months we should expect a gazillion of dance producers producing a fuckillion of Shangaan drum'n'bass mixes with farts over it, a David Guetta "Shangaan Sex Tapes". As one youtuber said: Enjoy the original sound before some douchey white boy sanitizes it and it becomes the next hipster fad.

Album review:

Wizzard Brew is the first album by glam rock group Wizzard, released in March 1973. In the US it was released by United Artists Records as 'Wizzard's Brew' (with adifferent cover photo) and failed to chart.

In approach, the album was much more experimental than the group's hit singles, with elements of hard rock (an approach Wood's previous band The Move had explored on their 1970 album 'Looking On'), and improvisation, especially on the lengthy 'Meet Me At The Jailhouse'. Wood frequently used ring modulation to give the instruments a harsh, distorted sound, and the album may represent an early foray into recording technique that would eventually be called lo-fi. Critical and popular reaction was mixed.
