Bill Hicks - Rant In E-Minor (1997)

ARTIST`````Bill Hicks
ALBUM`````Rant In E-Minor
GENRE`````Stand-up comedy, Genius, Character assassination
YEAR````````1997

Why?
Recently I watched American: The Bill Hicks Story documentary (very bleak & shitty fan-made effort if you ask me) and later discovered that I missed the best and rather famous Bill Hicks material ever recorded - Rant In E-Minor. Some bits from this album are just stunning pieces of character assassinations. It doesn't matter if you heard this before - hear it again and again because recordings like these remind us that it is healthy to occasionally express our anger in the most direct way possible.

Review from allmusic
Rant in E-Minor is the comedy equivalent of an Ingmar Bergman film. This posthumously released CD is so brutal, bitter, pessimistic, and honest that it is a very difficult task indeed to listen to it. Recorded most likely while he was going through chemotherapy for pancreatic cancer in 1993, Bill Hicks must have sensed the end was near for him. Like John Coltrane's wailing saxophone on "Interstellar Space," Rant in E-Minor seems to exorcise the burden of life from Hicks' body, while simultaneously reaching a level of passionate intensity rarely matched.

Review by NICK TAVARES
The images are as graphic as any nightly newscast. Pro-life warriors murdering doctors. Cops storming trailer parks. Jesse Helms and Jay Leno killing themselves. Ronald Reagan, George Bush and Dan Quayle urinating into Rush Limbaugh’s mouth. Federal officers blowing fire into a Waco compound. It’s likely more explicit than any NC-17 movie released in the past decade. But at no time is it obscene. Sure, it’s not appetizing, but it’s funny as anything,and it’s all geared towards proving his ultimate point: that we are all one and we have to live with each other.

Review by ALAN RANTA
Till that point, I thought Denis Leary's No Cure For Cancer was hilarious. Then I found out Leary lifted many of the ideas for his breakout CD from the material Bill had been developing since the early eighties for this album, watered them down, of course, to cater to the beer swilling, soap opera and wrestling watching pop fans Hicks stood against. Bill didn't really hate the people too lazy or ignorant to understand. His ultimate message, revealed to those who could see past his foul language and unapologetic delivery, was one of love, compassion, and understanding.

Black Books Seasons 1, 2, 3 (2000 - 2004)

Manny: You think I should wash my beard?
Bernard: Yes, I think you should wash it. Then you should shave it off, nail it to a frisbee, and fling it over a rainbow.

Info
Following the likeable, low-key How Do You Want Me? (BBC, 1998-99), Irish comedian Dylan Moran's second sitcom was a very different proposition.

Meet Bernard Black. Bernard is an anti-social, heavy drinking chain-smoker who owns a small London bookshop - an unusual vocation, given that he detests customers and delights in physically and verbally abusing them at every opportunity. His best (and only) friend in the world is his lunch time drinking partner Fran, a neurotic and boyfriend-desperate woman who owns the pretentious arts and crafts shop next to his. Bernard is cynical, abrasive and lazy, and is perfectly happy that way - but his life takes an unexpected turn when he sells 'The Little Book of Calm' to hyper-stressed accountant Manny Bianco, who against all odds ends up swallowing it. When the dust is settled, Manny will have a new job, Fran will have a new friend, and Bernard's life will be far more surreal (if that's possible).

Black Books debuted with minimal publicity in September 2000, but quickly became a cult hit on the back of overwhelmingly favourable word of mouth.

From the writer and lead actor Dylan Moran about the show - "We just wanted to cram as much elaborate stupidity into a half-hour that could make it be coherent and that you would believe"

Neil - Neil's Heavy Concept Album (Nigel Planer 1984)

ARTIST`````Neil / Nigel Planer
ALBUM`````
Neil's Heavy Concept Album
GENRE`````
Comedy, Parody, Spoken
YEAR````````1984

Review:
Nigel Planer (vocals) revives "Neil" from the short-lived yet highly influential BBC-TV program The Young Ones on Neil's Heavy Concept Album (1984). Although the show was set in the 1980s, Neil's lifestyle centers around the mid- to late-'60s hippie culture, an exceedingly antiquated notion directly contrasting his ultra-mod housemates. This explains the inclusion of the fairly wide selection of psychedelic and progressive nuggets amidst the spoken links and occasional originals. The idea for the long-player stemmed from his version of Traffic's early side "Hole in My Shoe" -- which came out as a single. When Planer appeared in character to promote it on BBC 2's Top of the Pops, he lost his footing, resulting in the backdrop falling apart and causing general mayhem on live television. The tune is given a lighthearted romp with notable session musician Rick Biddulph (guitar) working in phrases of the Beatles' "Strawberry Fields Forever" during the waning moments. Other fun covers are Tomorrow's "My White Bicycle," Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd on "The Gnome," Donovan's "Hurdy Gurdy Man," and "The Amoeba Song," aka the Incredible String Band's "A Very Cellular Song." Caravan's "Golf Girl" is worth additional mention, as it features a cameo voice-over from Dawn French -- half of the comedy team French & Saunders -- as (of all things) a policewoman. Instrumentally, Planer is supported by an all-star cast that includes Dave Stewart (keyboards/bass/drum/guitar), Barbara Gaskin (backing vocals), Pip Pyle (drums), Jakko M. Jakszyk (guitars), and jazz heavy Annie Whitehead (trombone), as well as Jimmy Hastings, who at one time was a primary contributor to the aforementioned prog rock outfit Caravan. "Lentil Nightmare" is a tremendously amusing Planer-penned composition that, among other things, quotes "In the Court of the Crimson King" by King Crimson amidst the proto-heavy progressive metal madness. The connecting bits of dialogue provide an outlet for Planer's quirky and earthy humor. Also of note is "Neil the Barbarian," a parody of a movie advert where Neil -- a strict vegan -- eats a hamburger, which transforms him into this superhero-type character. All said, Neil's Heavy Concept Album is thoroughly entertaining and recommended for inclined parties.

REFRESHMENT: RELIGULOUS THE MOVIE (2009)

My first movie post so far. The links are not mine I got them in an e-mail so I decided to put them to good use. There are only 4 rapidshare parts so it should be a quick download.

CERTAINLY NOT THE BEST BUT POSSIBLY THE FUNNIEST RELIGION DOCUMENTARY EVER

MY SHORT REVIEW:
Bill Maher brings a fresh and direct attack on religion as a whole in this amazingly entertaining documentary. There are a number of movies and video lectures that are far more serious, important and fact driven than "Religuous" but some moments from this movie simply must be seen as they completely unravel the ENORMOUS amount of PURE bullshit some people can say in front of a camera and then stick to that. I'll post a big post about some critical documentary movies filled with recommendations and links to torrents and stuff soon so stay tuned.

Someone wrote a nice and short critique at imdb about this movie and I agree with it completely so you should read it below.

SHORT REVIEW FROM IMDB:

Author: ctg0724 from United States
Two things about this film took away a star. One was that Bill Maher spent so much time with the ones he tried to make look bad that he didn't meet with enough experts who could further the points he was making. The second problem is that the people he interviewed could have easily made fools of themselves without him cutting them off and lecturing them. That being said, let's get to the good points.

For one thing, he makes it so clear how illogical the mass amount of people can be. He exposes phony beliefs and shows how they can become very protective against his film crew. The film stock they put into use is done masterfully. Plenty of laugh out loud moments (particularly the image of Jesus as a teenager, you will see). My word must be taken as truth when I say that the final part of the film MUST be seen. This isn't just about cracking jokes on faith. This film is about the human race taking responsibility of itself and stopping the damage it has been doing for far too long.

CHRIS MORRIS - BLUE JAM (2000)

ABSTRACT, CONTROVERSIAL, AND GORGEOUSLY PRODUCED ENGLISH SICK COMEDY
ARTIST``````CHRIS MORRIS
MIX`````
``````BLUE JAM
GENRE``````COMEDY, DRAMA
YEAR````````2000
DESCRIPTION:
Ladies and gentlemen, you are floating in farce. And Chris Morris wouldn't have it any other way. But first, the back-story: After his vicious, satirical television shows The Day Today and Brass Eye were cancelled, BBC's Radio 1 bought up his new series of dark, comedic ambient sketches entitled Blue Jam. This album collects the highlights. So to speak. From skits about evil four-year-olds, knob harmony, and a couple who is so apathetic that their only worry over their kidnapped son is whether or not to cancel the baby sitter -- all wrapped in a fug of electronic accompaniment by the likes of Aphex Twin and Brian Eno -- the jokes here are as black as soot. Think Steven Soderbergh's Schizopolis or those censored skits from The Kids in the Hall. Abhorrent tragi-comedy that would leave absurdists green with envy. Especially with ironic pillow talk like "Push your balls up my nose." Terrifying. Deeply hilarious. Like John Waters, you may often find Morris childish and repellant -- but you're glad he's out there.
DAVID CROSS - IT'S NOT FUNNY (STAND-UP COMEDY 2004)
HATING KIDS, HATING BUSH, HATING EVANESCENCE... DAVID CROSS LIVE AND NICELY RECORDED.
ARTIST`````````````DAVID CROSS
ALBUM`````````````IT'S NOT FUNNY
GENRE`````````````STAND-UP COMEDY
YEAR```````````````2004
MY VIEW:
One of his best performances. Good audio quality.
ALBUM INFO:
It's Not Funny is David Cross' 2004 stand-up comedy album, released on Sub Pop Records. The track titles, like those on his previous record Shut Up You Fucking Baby!, have no relevance to the bits Cross does on the album and are instead there to make fun of material performed by other comedians, either on the whole or targeted at specific comedians; e.g. the seventh track is probably a stab at comedians such as Margaret Cho, and track 4 is probably a stab at parody artists like "Weird Al" Yankovic.
Cross has said the album's title references children being laughed at by their friends while trying to tell them something important, only to reply, "Come on guys, it's not funny." Stand Up! Records also released a limited LP edition of 500 for this release, as they had for Shut Up You Fucking Baby!. Like the CD, it also contains a hidden track that plays from the label out to a locked groove. This edition is a single LP, unlike its predecessor.
