V.A. True Horrors Vol. 02 (2011)

A Bleeding Panda Blog Guest Compilation by Bagheera Münchgstettner

What?
A perfect, twisted and scary sequel to Bagheera Münchgstettner's True Horrors Vol.01.

This is a much more skilled, precise and organised selection of dark, cold synth tracks than on the previous comp. A few scattered oddities and classics give color to this emotional wasteland but overall - there is a prevailing feeling of doom.

A deep, dark mixture of unique and very memorable tracks (some very rare) that should be all listened as a whole. A definite standout is the Yabboq Penuel's 1.05 - I only wish it was twice as long.

This selection is definitely not for everybody as it takes away a lot of attention in it's uncompromising coldness and oddness - but that's why it's interesting and exotic at the same time.

Tracklist
01 Teddy Lasry - Workmen Choir (1981)
02 Florenza Mavelli - March Of The Soviets (2009)
03 A Blaze Colour - An Addict of Time (1982)

A Bleeding Panda Blog Guest Compilation by Bagheera Münchgstettner

What?
I am very happy to bring you True Horrors Vol 01 - the first in a series of Bagheera Münchgstettner's compilations.

Spooky, reverberated, metallic and wet it sounds like a dying promise or a that last, really bad cough that snatches away your breathe. From the energetic screams of Diamanda Galas over Rechenzentrum's barren Ahab and Hands In The Dark by Chromatics to the humorous, dancy and demented John Maus this compilation is a great intro for Bagheera's future works.

Enjoy this fine selection of bleached life and stand by for the excellent Vol. 02.

Tracklist
01 Diamanda Galas - Judgement Day (1992)
02 I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness - The Owl (2006)
03 Gus Gus - Is Jesus Your Pal (1996)
04 A Blaze Colour - Through With Life (1982)
05 Rechenzentrum - Ahab (2001)
06 Chromatics - Hands In The Dark (2007)
07 Peaches - I'm The Kinda (2003)
08 Twisted Wires - The Hunted (unreleased)
09 Disciplina Kičme - Novac Neće Doći (1985)
10 Second Layer - Japanese Headset (1981)

Slapp Happy - Acnalbasac Noom (1973)

ARTIST`````Acnalbasac Noom
ALBUM`````Slapp Happy
GENRE`````Avant-pop, Cabaret, Glam-Prog
YEAR````````1973

Info & Review
In 1974 Virgin Records rejected the album Acnalbasac Noom by the Avant-pop band Slapp Happy, made them re-record it with different backing musicians and then released it under the corrected title Casablanca Moon. Thirty-plus years later, Slapp Happy have re-released the original version of Acnalbasac Noom in the form it was intended, with four bonus tracks. It was recorded in Wümme, Germany in 1973 with Faust as their backing band and American guitarist Peter Blegvad, who was in Britain to complete his studies.

What made the album stand were the musical styles appearing on the album, which were absolutely out of step with what was common in those days - simple as glam but at moments complex as progressive, mixed into popular housewife styles of the 60's kitsch, tangos and even straightforward chansons. There are moments that totaly sound like hippie parents of Stereolab's band members. A dated sound when heard today but it's clean production and naive atmosphere make this collection of surreal and Kurt Weill-inspired expressionist cabaret ditties a must listen.

Magma - Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh (1973)

Extraterrestrial gospel
ARTIST`````Magma
ALBUM`````
Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh
GENRE`````
Art Rock, Jazz-rock, Fusion, Psychedelic,
YEAR````````1973

WHO:
Led by classically trained drummer Christian Vander, the Paris-based Magma have been, in their way, perhaps the ultimate progressive rock group; while other artists have achieved greater commercial success and critical acclaim, Magma have typified the many ambitions and excesses of the genre that won them as many detractors as fans, even going so far as to invent their own lyrical and musical language in order to bring their unique vision to life.

Review
(by Sean from www.progreviews.com)

This album is Magma's great opus. Whether one prefers one of their other studio or live releases to it, there is no doubt that Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh is the most original, definitive Magma album around (although this reviewer personally prefers the Mekanik Kommandoh version!).

Featuring a cast of thousands including a choir, brass section, flute and tuned percussion, Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh marries the stripped-down throbbing drive of Zeuhl with orchestral pomposity and operatic aspirations. To those who jokingly describe Magma as Klingon Opera, this is the album that would come closest. The power and command with which Magma drives their themes home with increasingly intense repetition is the key to understanding what the band is all about.

Magma can't really be compared to other progressive rock performers (although many can be compared to them). The dark majesty recalls the classical music of Wagner and Orff, particularly parts of Carmina Burana, but that's about as close as it gets. To understand Magma, one must experience Magma. This album is their masterpiece, and while it might be daunting for the sympho-head or neo-head, (try their live material as an intro instead) it is essential for anyone wanting to find out what Zeuhl was and is all about.
