Just when you thought this kind of tangled, floating, ambient wash -- sometimes with guitars, sometimes without -- couldn't get any better than specific parts of Susumu Yokota's Sakura and Grinning Cat, Colleen came along with Everyone Alive Wants Answers. Colleen is actually Cecile Schott, a Parisian who wrenches out cobwebbed melodies that are fully fleshed out as frequently as they are stunted and knotted. Her means aren't all that unique. Barbed glockenspiels, worn music boxes, humming keyboards, happenstance guitar melodies, soft-focus production -- all of that's been done before, right? What makes her stand out is that her songs seem meticulously stitched together while nearing the brink of collapse at the same time, almost all of the time.

Biography:

The Mumps were one of the most obscure, but distinctive, New York bands of the late '70s, performing an absurdly theatrical fusion of pop, punk, and glam rock. Led by vocalist Lance Loud, the group's music was an affectionate satire of '70s kitsch culture, predating the similar obsessions of the B-52's by a number of years. The Mumps rocked as hard as the New York Dolls, while writing clever pop hooks that updated trashy garage and bubblegum singles of the '70s. Although they never even earned a large underground following, the group was a favorite of many punk rockers of the era (including the Ramones, Blondie, the New York Dolls, X, Television, the Cramps, Devo, and the Go-Go's), as well as '80s alternative rockers like R.E.M., Game Theory, and Sparks.

About the album/compilation:

Fatal Charm compiles essentially the complete recorded works of the quirky New York band, including the simply wonderful "Crocodile Tears," as well as some equally spirited outtakes and live rehearsals. Though very little of the Mumps' music was released during their five years together as a band, their live shows were legendary, influencing many of the next generation of new wave and alternative rockers; Fatal Charm helps explain why bands continue to namedrop them 20 years later.

A Bleeding Panda Compilation!

Why?

I've been meaning to finish this one ever since the HD Computer Music comp. This one is brimming with "stuck in 80's" funk-disco classics, a few mega icky childish pop tracks (Scritti Politti anyone?) and as always some lost or faded gems (Tarzan The Breakman, Ja Ready To Rock, Gettin' Loose). Also, the highlight here is most definitely one of the dopest disco-funk tracks of the 1980's: Tee's Happy (Tee Scott Club Mix), a gorgeous paradise of rhythm machinery and heart ripping guitar and synth work.

Why?

Megafaun sound completely lost in time, frolicking around in forests, exploring gorges and finding shady rocks to use as diving boards into hot springs. Guys from The Onion said it the best - "Megafaun fits squarely in the bearded Caucasian folkie camp, but the ethereal Gather, Form & Fly is far too extraterrestrial-sounding to be bound to this planet, much less this country. Evoking a warmly inviting yet mysteriously alien countryside terrain reminiscent of those gorgeously golden wheat fields from Terrence Malick’s Days Of Heaven, Gather, Form & Fly has a psychedelic mind & a Pentecostal heart, applying raggedly strummed banjos and woozy acoustic guitars to harmonies that swell heavenward like ghostly dust clouds."

Bio

When Justin Vernon left Raleigh-by-way-of-Eau-Claire-WI indie folkers DeYarmond Edison to go on to late-'00s indie wunderkind status as Bon Iver, the remaining members of DE, Phil Cook, Brad Cook, and Joe Westerlund, carried on in North Carolina as Megafaun. With an impossible-to-pinpoint, laid back lo-fi sound incorporating Byrds-esque harmonies, elegiac folk-picking, and off-kilter instrumentation (think a rougher-around-the-edges Fleet Foxes), Megafaun earned accolades beyond their feted former bandmate. The trio gained solid enough reviews for the sparse debut disc Bury the Square in 2008; however, their sophomore release the next year, Gather, Form & Fly, on the Home Tapes label, drew raves, with high marks from the Onion AV Club and Pitchfork.

This extraordinary Chinese-Canadian documentary illuminates the human price involved in China's ascent into a global economic power: every year over 130 million migrant workers take an arduous journey back home. Emotionally engaging and starkly beautiful, the film offers intimate observations of one fractured family, shedding light on the human cost of China’s ascendance as an economic superpower. It's hard to think of another film that captures so vividly and painfuly the human price paid in the country's rapid process of modernization.

The game is drenched in twilight, the horizons frayed with purple. small pixel creatures lend hints of life and detail to the game’s massive rooms. a downtempo soundtrack ranges from hushed to softly jazzy, and hovers at the fringe of the player’s perception. the game itself is about a ball, with small eyes that sometimes blink and a short mouth that never moves.
